At Partnear we are continuously looking to find more efficient ways to complete designs that are fit for purpose by solving the problems that our clients may be facing or by facilitating the developments they wish to have constructed.
Nearly all civil design projects must assess, evaluate and overcome physical, geometric and cost constraints to develop designs that are not only meeting technical requirements, but also cost and time limitations. Design processes all achieve the same documentation outcome, but the way in which this occurs greatly affects lead time of design, cost of the design process, quality of documentation, suitability of the design solution and the value of constructed works. A 3D modelled design enables the visualisation of constraints earlier in the design process to improve decision making and reduce rework as constraint limits are found during element design.
Due to this, our civil engineers utilise the use of 3D design software (specifically 12d model) to complete the design of a variety of civil engineering works including road constructions/ reconstructions, gravity services (water, drainage and sewer), pipelines, water sensitive urban design, waterway renewal works, levee developments and other services.
Completing a 3D model as early as possible in the design process allows for a considered approach to dealing with site constraints and designed asset performance, along with ensuring scoping items are fully understood at an early stage in the design process. This can greatly speed up the design development, review and iteration when there is limited documentation.
In most situations a purely 2D functional design does not prove that the design solution proposed will actually work, this can occur through one or multiple of the below;
Not able to achieve levels within minimum and maximum grading constraints or similar
Road/ kerbs not grading as expected
Drainage/ sewer grading not working
Batter extents required to allow design areas to adhere to required grading limitations can result in the available land not being suitable for the proposed use or requiring the inclusion of retaining walls which may not have been allowed for in construction budgets
2D location of existing services do not provide an accurate representation of constraints on usable space
Early and detailed 3D models can reduce the design project risk by limiting potential for rework by the consultant, limit delays while scope is being negotiated and allow for faster design 'optioneering' and iteration. This helps enable a design program to remain on track and reduce impact on subsequent project stages.
With over 10 years of experience using 12d model to complete various projects our engineers have noted the following,
12d model provides a stable platform limiting rework if a model becomes corrupt and as such does not require backing up multiple versions
Works on remote servers allowing users to work from home or the office - this can take the form of 12d synergy or Google Drive
While 12d model does not provide a live update of cross sections and longitudinal sections into your CAD program of choice, the system runs quickly and reliably. With an appropriate CAD process, Xreferances and utilising automation within 12d model known as Chains, updates to outputs can be completed in a matter of seconds
